Kellen Moore Eyes Head Coach Role Amid Saints’ Receiver Shuffle

Dallas, Texas – The Dallas Cowboys recently interviewed Kellen Moore for their head coach opening following their decision to part ways with Mike McCarthy. Moore, a former Cowboys offensive coordinator, was initially a leading candidate for the role. However, Brian Schottenheimer impressed team owners Jerry and Stephen Jones during his interview, making the competition for the job intense.
Moore’s career path has taken a risky turn as he accepted a position with the New Orleans Saints, who are currently facing a troubling salary cap situation. Despite the Saints starting the season 0-2, Moore has helped the team appear competitive in its first two games. Yet, the Saints roster lacks familiar faces from Moore’s Cowboys days.
The team’s wide receiver lineup has changed significantly. The Saints traded for DeVaughn Vele from the Denver Broncos and acquired Ja'Lynn Polk from the New England Patriots, although Polk is on injured reserve. The alterations continue to impact player dynamics, putting former Cowboy Wilson in a tough position.
At 29 years old, Wilson is now part of the practice squad, struggling to find his place behind Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, and Brandin Cooks. He is also overshadowed by promising second-year players Mason Tipton and Trey Palmer, who have had limited game time this season. Wilson’s prospects of breaking into the active roster look slim, given the depth at his position.
Wilson’s last notable performance came in 2021, when he recorded 45 catches for 607 yards and six touchdowns for the Cowboys, stepping up when Michael Gallup was sidelined due to injury. He was a dependable target for Dak Prescott during crucial moments. Yet, his subsequent moves to the Miami Dolphins and later the Saints have not yielded similar success, diminishing his NFL career.
With tight end Juwan Johnson leading the Saints with 13 targets and running back Alvin Kamara being one of the top receiving backs, Wilson’s chances of contributing appear bleak. The Cowboys fans still remember his standout 2021 season, but doubts loom over his future in the league if he cannot secure a spot on a struggling Saints team.
