Novi Michigan Water Main Break

NOVI, Mich. – A boil water advisory is in effect for parts of Novi and surrounding areas following a water main break on Thursday morning, September 25, 2025. The break occurred on 14 Mile Road, just west of M-5, disrupting water service and prompting officials to take precautionary measures.

City officials reported the loss of water pressure around 7:20 a.m., traced back to a 42-inch transmission line belonging to the Great Lakes Water Authority. As a safety measure, residents are advised to boil water for at least one minute before consuming it.

The advisory includes Walled Lake, Wixom, and portions of Commerce Township, with authorities expanding the alert as necessary. Schools across the affected areas, including the Novi Community School District and the Walled Lake Consolidated School District, closed for the day. Students were sent home as access to clean water is crucial for health and sanitation.

Residents have been advised to use boiled, bottled, or treated water for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and preparing food. Unboiled water is considered unsafe due to potential bacterial contaminants that can enter the supply during pressure loss.

After the water service restoration, officials indicated that testing would take place to confirm safety. The boil advisory will be lifted once two consecutive tests show no contamination within a 24-hour period.

In the meantime, the Road Commission for Oakland County has closed 14 Mile Road to assist with repairs and advised residents to seek alternate routes. Recovery efforts are being coordinated by local authorities, including Oakland County Emergency Management.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated through local government websites and social media for further information on the advisory and water quality status. The Great Lakes Water Authority has also set up a contact number for residents with inquiries: 313-267-6000.
