Houston Rockets Face Decisions on Tari Eason’s Role This Season

Houston, Texas — As the Houston Rockets prepare for the 2025-26 NBA season, head coach Ime Udoka emphasizes the importance of versatility in their roster. Udoka recently stated that the fifth starting spot will be determined during training camp, sparking competition among players.

This competition opens up opportunities for players like Dorian Finney-Smith and Steven Adams to increase their roles. However, it poses a challenge for young forward Tari Eason, who may struggle to secure a starting position, according to basketball analyst Paulo Alves.

Eason, who has impressed Rockets coaches through three seasons in the NBA, is known for his electrifying defensive skills. In 161 career games, he has averaged 10.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.2 assists, making him a valuable asset coming off the bench. Despite his potential, Alves warns that negotiations for Eason’s rookie extension could hinder his chances of moving into the starting lineup.

“Middle to long-term, I do think it might impact [Tari Eason’s] chance of starting,” Alves stated. He pointed out that if Eason does not have a deal signed and is competing closely with other players, the lack of a signed contract may affect his chances negatively.

The Rockets are in a tricky situation with Eason, whose role is critical to the team’s defensive strategies. The organization has prioritized extending Eason, even as they plan for a potential contract extension for star player Kevin Durant at the end of the season.

Considering the financial commitments previously made to Jabari Smith Jr., it is likely Eason will seek a similar deal based on their development trajectories. However, the looming extensions for Durant and Amen Thompson might limit the Rockets’ ability to meet Eason’s expectations.

Starting Eason would signal his growing importance to the team, particularly on defense. Yet if players like Smith or Finney-Smith perform comparably during training camp and preseason, Eason may return to lead the bench unit for another season while negotiations progress.
