Walmart Product Recalls September 2023

Walmart, USA – A series of significant product recalls affecting Walmart stores and Walmart.com was announced in September, as manufacturers and regulators raised alarms over health and safety issues. Concerns varied from fire hazards to risks of injury and foodborne illness.

Product recalls are vital for consumer protection, especially when everyday items may pose unexpected dangers. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates that incidents related to consumer products result in over $1 trillion in costs annually due to deaths and injuries.

One recall involved oven doors that could unexpectedly close, presenting a burn risk. Reports indicated 95 incidents, including two cases of second-degree burns. Approximately 1.29 million units were affected, sold at Walmart and several other retailers.

In addition, cooling pads and certain dressers were recalled. The cooling pads could overheat when exposed to sunlight, causing burns to children, with one incident reported. About 20,000 units were sold at Walmart.com and Target during the summer months.

Dressers that lacked adequate anchoring posed tip-over hazards, especially for children. While no injuries were reported, around 11,200 units were recalled from Walmart and other retailers.

Another concern involved lithium-ion batteries in portable power banks, which could overheat. Reports indicated 33 incidents, four minor injuries, and one case of significant property damage. About 481,000 units were sold at Walmart and various online platforms.

The recalls extend to products with dangerous cords and electrical switches, leading to strangulation and fire risks, respectively. Walmart emphasized its commitment to customer safety and swift action in removing recalled products.

In addition to those recalls, the USDA issued a recall on ready-to-eat meals such as Marketside Linguine with Beef Meatballs. The meals may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, which can lead to serious health risks.

Consumers are urged to check product packaging and model numbers and to follow instructions for refunds and returns. For detailed steps, customers can refer to manufacturer websites or the CPSC.
