Browns Struggle with Offense Amidst Quarterback Battle
CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland Browns’ ongoing quarterback battle has overshadowed serious weaknesses in their offense this season. With three games now in the books, the unit has struggled to find its rhythm.
Quarterback Joe Flacco, who joined the Browns this offseason, is tied for the second-fewest completed air yards in the NFL with an average of 3.8, according to Next Gen Stats. This trend is concerning for a team that ranked 31st in yards gained per play last year and currently sits at 22nd.
Flacco’s age, at 40, raises questions about his capability, especially after last season’s dismal performance. The Browns’ offense needs more deep shots to stretch the field, which could alleviate some pressure from the offensive line and allow for better passing opportunities.
Rookie running back Quinshon Judkins has been a standout performer despite limited practice time, managing 110 yards after contact so far. His ability to push through defenses was evident in Week 3, when he scored the team’s only touchdown in a comeback victory against the Green Bay Packers.
However, the offensive line continues to be a liability. Following Dawand Jones‘ season-ending knee injury and Jack Conklin‘s ongoing elbow issues, the pressure on Flacco has increased. Cornelius Lucas leads the league in quarterback pressures allowed, and without improved pass blocking, the situation could worsen.
Flacco has also contributed to the team’s struggles by throwing four interceptions and losing one fumble this season, accounting for all five of the Browns’ turnovers. Coach Kevin Stefanski‘s cautious play-calling clashes with Flacco’s more aggressive style. This philosophical divide could stifle the offense’s potential.
Despite these issues, the Browns’ defense remains a strong asset, ranking first in total yards allowed. The team needs to find a way to balance its offense to compete against high-scoring rivals like the Detroit Lions.
The upcoming game against the Lions will be a crucial test for the Browns. As they prepare, Coach Stefanski faces a critical decision: will he allow Flacco to take risks or maintain a conservative approach? The outcome could significantly influence Cleveland’s trajectory this season.
