Churches Host Blessing of Animals Events This Weekend

HENDERSON, NC — The Church of the Holy Innocents will host a Blessing of the Animals on Saturday, October 4, at 11 a.m. on its premises at 210 South Chestnut St. Locals are encouraged to bring their pets, though Rector Rev. Robert Beauchamp humorously noted that snakes are not welcome. People can also bring photos of their animals for the blessing.
This event is part of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, observed each year on October 4. Rev. Beauchamp emphasized the importance of recognizing the bond between humans and their pets.
Meanwhile, St. Mark’s and St. Luke’s Episcopal churches will offer a Blessing of the Animals service on Sunday, October 5, starting at 10 a.m. at Elliott Park. Community members are welcome to bring their pets, ensuring they are leashed or securely contained. Attendees can also bring chairs or blankets for comfort during the outdoor event. In case of bad weather, the service will take place indoors at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
In Temecula, California, St. Thomas Episcopal Church will host its Blessing of the Animals on the same day, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Rev. Samuel Bourbon will lead this event, which includes activities such as face painting for children, a demonstration by the 4 Paws 4 Patriots program, and live music. Bourbon remarked, “A Blessing of Animals witnesses to God’s love, care and concern for creation.”
St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Mountain Home, Arkansas, will also celebrate with its annual Blessing of the Animals ceremony at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Pets should be on leashes or in carriers. Those who cannot bring live animals are invited to bring stuffed animals or photos. Additionally, a pet food drive will accompany the event, benefitting local animal shelters.
