Jeff Landry Louisiana National Guard Deployment

NEW ORLEANS, La. — Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry announced on Monday that he has submitted a formal request for federal assistance to activate up to 1,000 National Guard personnel. The announcement was made during an appearance on the Sean Hannity Show.

Landry cited ongoing public safety concerns in the state, highlighting violent crime statistics that exceed the national average. He noted that local law enforcement is struggling to handle rising rates of homicides, carjackings, and gang violence.

“Since taking office, we have made real progress in driving down crime across Louisiana — but the job is far from finished,” Landry said. “Federal partnerships in our toughest cities have worked, and now, with the support of President Trump and Secretary Hegseth, we are taking the next step by bringing in the National Guard. This mission is about saving lives and protecting families.”

According to Landry, the deployment will prioritize patrols in high-crime areas like New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Shreveport. The National Guard is expected to provide logistical and communication support as well.

Previous deployments of the National Guard have reportedly led to significant crime reductions during major events, such as a 50% drop in crime during Mardi Gras this year. However, local officials in Shreveport and New Orleans have expressed concerns about the necessity of this measure.

Although current data suggests that violent crime in New Orleans has decreased this year, Landry remains steadfast in his belief that urgent actions are required. His request is now pending review by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who will decide whether to grant the support.
