Red Sox Best Yankees in Wild Card Showdown

NEW YORK, NY — The Boston Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees 1-0 in Game 1 of their American League wild-card series on Wednesday, taking an early lead in the best-of-three matchup.
Boston’s ace, Garrett Crochet, pitched brilliantly, allowing just one run over 7 2/3 innings. The only run came from a home run by Anthony Volpe in the second inning. Crochet, who struck out 11 batters and threw a 100 mph pitch during the game, retired 17 consecutive hitters after Volpe’s homer.
The Yankees struggled offensively, going 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed frustration, stating, “We have been playing with a lot on the line seemingly every single day. Tonight was a great baseball game that we just couldn’t get that final punch in.”
In a crucial Game 2, Carlos Rodon will take the mound for New York. Rodon, who had an AL-best .188 batting average against this season, is seeking redemption after posting a 5.74 ERA against the Red Sox in three outings this year. He has performed strongly in the postseason before.
Boston will counter with Brayan Bello, who is making his postseason debut. Bello finished the regular season with an 11-9 record and a 3.35 ERA. “We have Brayan, who likes it here,” Boston manager Alex Cora said. “I expect the game to be just like this one.”
The tension rises as the Yankees aim for a comeback, facing elimination in front of their home crowd. The winner of this series will advance to meet the Seattle Mariners in the Division Series.
