Luka Doncic Eases into Lakers Training Camp After Busy Summer

Los Angeles, CA—Luka Doncic is taking a slower approach as he reenters basketball training with the Los Angeles Lakers. After a demanding summer playing for Slovenia in the EuroBasket, Doncic aims to manage his workload carefully during the Lakers’ training camp.
Doncic, who scored 39 points in Slovenia’s quarterfinal loss to Germany at the 2025 EuroBasket, discussed his plan on Thursday after the third day of camp. He emphasized the importance of easing back into gameplay to prevent injuries.
“Yeah, obviously probably take it a little bit slower than the usual,” Doncic said. He noted that the time spent with Slovenia helped prepare him, making this transition smoother. He will participate in his first preseason game against the Phoenix Suns on Friday night.
The Lakers are focused on being in peak physical condition this season, especially after being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Coach JJ Redick has implemented intense drills to enhance the team’s fitness.
“It’s not just physical shape. It’s mental shape too,” Doncic explained. He praised the team’s commitment to training, noting that everyone seemed to be in great shape and running well.
Gabe Vincent, a teammate, spoke highly of Doncic’s skills on the court: “He sees the floor so well. He could score from anywhere on the floor. He is always a threat.” Vincent acknowledged the learning curve the team faces while adapting to Doncic’s style and decision-making.
Coach Redick’s goal for the team has been to achieve a ‘championship shape.’ After a demanding workout on Wednesday, Redick humorously remarked on the players’ likely feelings towards the intense training.
Deandre Ayton, another player on the team, views Doncic and the Lakers as a chance to reinvigorate his career. Vincent indicated that the group embraces the tough training schedule, knowing the importance of collective effort.
Redick confirmed injuries to players James, Kleber, Smart, and Thiero, stating that they will not participate in the upcoming game. Kleber’s quad injury is minor, but the team remains cautious with their players.
