House Of Guinness Netflix Drama Penrhyn Castle

BANGOR, Wales — A new Netflix period drama titled “The House of Guinness” is captivating viewers with the tumultuous story of the legendary brewing family. Set in the 19th century, the series explores the aftermath of brewery mogul Sir Benjamin Guinness‘s death in 1868, while showcasing the grandeur of Penrhyn Castle in north Wales as the family’s home.

The show, which debuted on September 25, tells the tales of Benjamin’s four adult children: Arthur, Edward, Anne, and Ben. It uses this haunting backdrop to depict their struggles with inheritance and the responsibilities of managing their father’s extensive brewing empire.

Created by Steven Knight, known for “Peaky Blinders,” the drama intricately weaves fact and fiction. Knight stated, “It’s the extraordinary story of a family who happens to be the inheritors of the biggest brewery in the world.” He expressed that the series offers viewers a blend of historical context and rich storytelling.

Most filming for “The House of Guinness” occurred in north Wales and England’s North West due to limited locations resembling Dublin in 1868. Executive producer Karen Wilson revealed that the production team thoroughly explored Ireland and the UK to find suitable sites, emphasizing the need for settings that reflect the era.

Ceri Williams, the general manager for Penrhyn Castle, expressed pride in hosting the series, highlighting that it delves into themes such as wealth disparities and family conflict—issues that resonate within the castle’s own history.

Penrhyn Castle holds a significant historical context itself, deriving wealth from sugar and slate industries and representing the complexities of Britain’s colonial past. As the series unfolds, viewers are expected to reflect on both the family legacies and the broader historical narratives surrounding them.
