India West Indies 2025 Test Match

AHMEDABAD, India — The first Test match between India and West Indies began on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at the Narendra Modi Stadium. This match marks Shubman Gill‘s first time captaining India in a home Test. India is eager to prove themselves after a disappointing 3-0 defeat to New Zealand last year and a recent drawn series in England.

As India gears up for the two-match series, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah returns to the squad. Bumrah had only played three out of five matches during the England tour but expressed readiness for the upcoming matches, according to selector Ajit Agarkar. “We have had a fair break, and Bumrah is ready and keen to play both matches,” Agarkar said.

Unfortunately, India will miss wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who is sidelined with an injury. Ravindra Jadeja has been appointed vice-captain in Pant’s absence. Meanwhile, West Indies captain Roston Chase is preparing for spin-friendly conditions with a new squad that includes left-arm spinner Khary Pierre, who previously excelled in domestic matches.

The match started with West Indies winning the toss and opting to bat first. Their decision backfired as they found themselves under severe pressure from the Indian bowling attack, losing five wickets before lunch. Pakistan’s fast bowlers, Mohammed Siraj and Bumrah, dominated, sharing seven wickets between them and bundling the Windies out for 162 runs.

In response, India began their innings positively with KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal adding a strong 68-run stand for the opening wicket. Despite losing Jaiswal for 36 runs and a brief hiccup when Sai Sudharsan was dismissed cheaply, Rahul (53 not out) and captain Gill (18 not out) ensured the day ended without further damage, leaving India at 121 for 2 at stumps, trailing by 41 runs.

As the teams take to the field for Day 2, India looks to capitalize on their strong start and push for a significant lead in the first innings.
