Beverly Hills, CA — Dwayne Johnson has put on 30 pounds and undergone an incredible transformation to portray MMA fighter Mark Kerr in the new film ‘The Smashing Machine’, set to release on October 3. Johnson revealed his intense preparation during a recent media event, showing his commitment to embodying the character.

In discussing his preparation, Johnson explained how he worked with director Benny Safdie to achieve a look that mirrored Kerr’s impressive physique. ‘You’re going to have to get bigger,’ Safdie told him. Johnson took on this challenge seriously, focusing on gaining muscle with specific workouts rather than relying on unhealthy diets.

Johnson spent several hours a day in the gym, participating in MMA training camps to ensure he could move like an elite fighter. He explained that Kerr has a unique body type, stating, ‘Kerr has a rare one-of-one body with fast-twitch fibers. To gain that kind of muscle requires a different regimen.’ He engaged in rigorous training to ensure he could compete physically.

The actor’s process included extensive make-up sessions that took up to four hours daily, applying prosthetics crafted by award-winning make-up artist Kazu Hiro to complete his transformation. ‘I have never worked harder for a role,’ Johnson remarked, emphasizing the challenge of his newest project.

Critics have responded positively to Johnson’s portrayal, with some claiming it’s one of his best performances to date. Kerr himself seemed moved by Johnson’s dedication, stating how his son felt Johnson walked and talked like him after watching the film. ‘It was a whole narrative of confirmation,’ Kerr shared. ‘If anybody on the planet can validate Dwayne’s performance, it would be my son.’

The film also explores Kerr’s personal struggles and relationships, with actress Emily Blunt portraying his ex-wife, Dawn Staples. Safdie aimed to capture the emotional depth of their dynamic, making the scenes challenging for all actors involved. Johnson described these moments on set as ‘heart-wrenching’ and ‘raw,’ contributing to his emotional investment in the character.

Johnson’s portrayal doesn’t just highlight Kerr’s fighting career; it sheds light on the toll that the sport takes on athletes’ lives and relationships. The film aims to start conversations about the impacts of sports on personal lives, showcasing the highs and lows of being a fighter.

As anticipation builds for the film, Johnson’s hard work and dedication to authenticity promise to deliver an engaging story that resonates with both fans of MMA and cinema alike.
