Disney Joins Forces with Katherine Rundell for ‘Impossible Creatures’ Film Franchise

BURBANK, Calif. — Disney has secured the film rights to Katherine Rundell’s acclaimed fantasy series, “Impossible Creatures,” in a deal reportedly worth seven figures. Rundell will adapt the first two books into screenplays, marking a significant step for the author whose works have captivated audiences worldwide.
“Impossible Creatures” has rapidly gained popularity, akin to blockbusters such as “Harry Potter” and “The Hunger Games.” Since its debut in 2023, the first book has sold over 4 million copies globally. The second book, “The Poisoned King,” just hit the shelves, further fueling anticipation for the series.
Rundell, who is the first UK children’s author since J.K. Rowling to hold the number one spot on both the UK and U.S. children’s charts simultaneously, has seen her recognition grow since winning Author of the Year and Children’s Book of the Year at The British Book Awards in 2024. Disney executives, including Bob Iger, were eager to forge a partnership with her after the success of the first two titles.
“When I read Impossible Creatures, I knew it belonged here at Disney,” said Iger. He praised the vibrant world Rundell created and expressed excitement about bringing the story to life on screen.
The series follows Christopher, a human boy who discovers a magical world during a holiday in the Scottish Highlands. There, he meets Mal, a girl from this hidden realm, and together they embark on a quest to save magical creatures that depend on a dwindling force for survival.
Disney intends to make a substantial investment in the franchise, not only through film adaptations but also in merchandise and potential theme park attractions. Rundell’s company, Impossible Films, will work closely with Disney in developing both current and future literary properties.
Disney representatives have expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with Rundell and her team, noting her unique vision aligns perfectly with Disney’s storytelling tradition. As they prepare to embark on this cinematic journey, all eyes are on how “Impossible Creatures” will unfold on the big screen.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to be linking arms with Disney,” Rundell stated. “Our ambition is to build Glimouria and Impossible Creatures into a spectacular series of films, so we can entertain and inspire family audiences across the world.”
