John Lithgow Dumbledore Hbo Harry Potter

CADGWITH, UK — The casting of John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore in HBO‘s new “Harry Potter” series has been confirmed, providing fans their first look at the actor in his wizarding robes. Photographs shared on the social media platform X show Lithgow, known for roles in “The Crown” and “Dexter,” dressed as the Hogwarts headmaster, complete with a long white beard and flowing robes.

This adaptation, being developed by showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod, aims to offer a more faithful interpretation of J.K. Rowling’s original novels compared to the previous film adaptations. The series intends to dedicate an entire season to each book, a significant shift from the eight-movie format.

In recent filming at Kynance Cove and Cadgwith, the crew captured scenes featuring Lithgow as Dumbledore, who was observed rehearsing his lines by curious locals on a Cornish beach. The road between Prazegooth Lane and Campion Lane has been closed for filming, indicating the unique settings being used to bring the Wizarding World to life.

HBO’s adaptation will include a completely recast student trio, with Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton stepping into the roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, respectively. Established actors like Paapa Essiedu and Nick Frost will portray adult characters Severus Snape and Rubeus Hagrid.

The announcement of Lithgow as Dumbledore has sparked mixed reactions from fans. While some appreciate the casting, others have raised concerns, especially regarding the decision to reboot the franchise so soon after the films concluded in 2011. Notably, many have drawn comparisons between Lithgow’s portrayal and those of former actors Richard Harris and Michael Gambon.

“I’m speechless. John Lithgow as Dumbledore is already perfect,” one fan posted on X, while another added, “Finally! He looks awesome!” This enthusiasm suggests a hopeful anticipation for the new series.

Despite fan concerns regarding changes to the storyline, like Dumbledore’s involvement in scenes not described in the books, Lithgow remains excited. He expressed admiration for his predecessors and acknowledged feeling both enthusiastic and intimidated by the role, stating, “I will be following the great Michael Gambon and Richard Harris.” The series is set to premiere on HBO in 2027.
