Lake Superior Waves Sandstone Cliffs

Munising, MI—Strong autumn winds sent large waves crashing into the iconic sandstone cliffs of Lake Superior this week. West winds blowing at 15 to 20 mph built waves of 4 to 7 feet along the stretch between Munising and Grand Marais, with even larger swells arriving from the open lake.

Spray filled the air around Miners Castle, Lover’s Leap, and Chapel Rock throughout the afternoon as the waves struck the cliffs. MLive senior photographer Joel Bissell captured incredible images while hiking the 10-mile Chapel-Mosquito trail loop, showcasing the beauty of the stormy shoreline.

Despite the rough waters, Lake Superior retained its signature turquoise and deep blue hues, with rolling waves reflecting flashes of sunlight as they battered the sandstone walls. Farther offshore, conditions were even more severe, with swells of 8 to 11 feet reported and Gale Warnings issued for parts of eastern Lake Superior.

The iconic shoreline is constantly shaped by erosion. Bissell noted the importance of staying on marked trails and keeping a safe distance from cliff edges, as the sandstone along Pictured Rocks is known to erode and can collapse unexpectedly.

Safety guidelines for kayaks and boats going out on their own are available, and weather advisories for the area can be found online. Visitors should remain cautious and aware of conditions during these turbulent autumn days.
