5.0 Magnitude Earthquake Hits the Dominican Republic Monday Afternoon
Estebanía, Dominican Republic – A 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck near Estebanía on Monday afternoon, October 20, 2025. The tremor occurred just after 3 p.m. local time, reported the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake was centered approximately 8 miles from Estebanía at a shallow depth of about 6 miles, causing the shaking to be felt more strongly on the surface.
No immediate reports of damage or injuries have come from the area. Estebanía is located in the southeastern region of Azua Province, roughly 64 miles from the capital city of Santo Domingo.
This earthquake follows a 5.7 magnitude quake that hit the region on August 5, highlighting the ongoing seismic activity in the Caribbean. The Dominican Republic sits on the northern edge of the Caribbean tectonic plate, an area known for significant seismic activity.
Residents across the affected region detail feeling intense tremors, particularly those closer to the epicenter. Hegel Martínez, a local resident, described the experience on social media, stating, “First time I felt a tremor like that; I thought it was because I was dizzy.”
Seismic activity is common in this region, given its history of earthquakes, including a notable 8.1 magnitude quake in 1946 and a 6.4 magnitude quake near Puerto Rico in 2020. In 2021, an earthquake in the vicinity resulted in over 700 fatalities and thousands of injuries. Local agencies have increasingly emphasized earthquake preparedness strategies over recent years as a proactive response.
The USGS continuously monitors seismic events, determining their significance based on three factors: magnitude, the number of “Did You Feel It?” responses, and PAGER alert levels. As of this report, the October 20 quake has not been classified among the most significant worldwide; however, local and international agencies remain vigilant about aftershocks and ground conditions in impacted areas.
Authorities are urging local residents to stay informed and adhere to safety guidance from national emergency services. The monitoring of seismic activity in the Dominican Republic will be ongoing as the community assesses potential impacts from this quake.
