Warner Bros. Revives Gremlins Franchise With New Film
BURBANK, Calif. — Warner Bros. is bringing back the beloved “Gremlins” franchise with a new movie set to hit theaters on November 19, 2027. This announcement was made by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav during the company’s third-quarter earnings call on Thursday.
Steven Spielberg will serve as executive producer for the film through his company, Amblin Entertainment. Chris Columbus, who wrote the original 1984 film, will return to direct and produce the new installment.
The first “Gremlins” movie, released in 1984 and directed by Joe Dante, became a pop-culture phenomenon. It introduced audiences to a charming creature called a Mogwai, which is adopted by a suburban family. However, when they break care rules, the Mogwai turns into destructive green monsters, leading to chaos. The film grossed $212 million worldwide, making it a box-office sensation.
In 1990, a sequel titled “Gremlins 2: The New Batch” was released. Although it earned only $41 million at the box office, it developed a cult following, often appreciated for its humor and satirical approach to the original.
To gauge current interest in the franchise, Warner Bros. also produced an animated series titled “Secrets of the Mogwai,” which premiered in 2023 and has aired two successful seasons on Max.
During the earnings call, Zaslav touted Warner Bros.’ resurgence as a leader in theatrical releases, stating, “We are leading the 2025 box office domestically and internationally, the only studio to cross $4 billion in revenue this year. Our lineup reflects a variety of stories that appeal to all audiences.” This has positioned the studio as a desirable venue for creatives in Hollywood.
The adventure surrounding the new “Gremlins” film builds excitement as fans await further details, including casting information and plot specifics.
