PITTSBURGH, Pa. — The Pittsburgh Steelers signed running back Trey Sermon to the active roster on Saturday, ensuring he will be in uniform for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium.

Sermon, a former third-round draft pick, has been on the Steelers’ practice squad this season, playing mainly on special teams. He has played in three games, accumulating 28 special teams snaps but only one offensive snap since joining the team after a successful tryout at rookie minicamp in May.

In order to make room for Sermon on the 53-man roster, the Steelers waived outside linebacker DeMarvin Leal on Thursday. Leal cleared waivers and will return to the practice squad. The team also elevated linebacker Mark Robinson from the practice squad for additional depth as they prepare to face the Chargers.

Robinson, a seventh-round pick in 2022, returns to the Steelers after spending time with the New England Patriots and New York Jets. He brings valuable experience as a special teams contributor, having played in all 34 games for the Steelers over the last two seasons before being released at the end of training camp.

During Sermon’s brief time with the Steelers, he has shown his potential as a running back, rushing for 50 yards on 10 attempts during the preseason. However, he remains behind Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell on the depth chart. The Steelers promoted Sermon to the active roster after reaching the limit on practice squad elevations.

In addition to the roster moves, it was noted that rookie quarterback Will Howard remains on injured reserve and must be activated by Wednesday to avoid missing the rest of the season.
