Tom Bergeron Returns as Judge on Dancing With the Stars 20th Anniversary
Los Angeles, CA – Tom Bergeron, the original host of ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ is making a much-anticipated return to the ballroom as a guest judge on the show’s 20th anniversary episode airing Tuesday night. This marks his first appearance on the popular dance competition since he was let go in 2020 amidst controversy over casting decisions.
Bergeron hosted the series for 28 seasons before exiting due to disagreements over show direction, particularly regarding the casting of Sean Spicer, former White House Press Secretary. “I did not like being lied to, and he did that,” Bergeron said, referencing the conflicts with the previous showrunner. “It pissed me off.”
<pHis return comes after original showrunner Conrad Green rejoined the series, which Bergeron cites as a key reason for his reevaluation. “If the previous regime was still in charge, I wouldn’t go back,” he said in an interview. “But with Conrad there, the show has been gaining momentum, and I want to be part of that.”
During his guest judging appearance, Bergeron aims to focus on the emotional aspects of each performance rather than the technical details, which will be handled by the other judges. “Was I moved? Did I laugh when I was supposed to?” he asked rhetorically, highlighting his intent to connect with the performances on a deeper level.
Reflecting on his departure, he expressed satisfaction that the show has moved away from casting political figures, a point of contention that contributed to his exit. He emphasized the importance of the show providing an escape from the political climate, stating, “Dancing With the Stars should be two hours where you can just get away from all the bull and enjoy yourself.”
Although Bergeron ruled out a return as the host or as a contestant, he is enthusiastic about reconnecting with the cast and crew. “I’m looking forward to being in an environment surrounded by people I really care about on live television,” he said. “It’s my happy place.”
This evening’s episode promises to be an emotional and nostalgic celebration as past champions join Bergeron in the audience, marking a significant moment in the show’s history.
