Chapel Hill Utility Pole Crash

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Four people were injured late Monday night in a crash involving a utility pole along Weaver Dairy Extension.

The accident occurred just after 10 p.m. between Palafox Drive and Rowe Road, according to the Chapel Hill Police Department. A driver slammed into the pole, causing significant damage.

The driver and three passengers were transported to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, their injuries are described as non-life-threatening, officials confirmed.

The crash also knocked out power for approximately 175 customers in the area, according to Duke Energy’s outage map. Crews worked through the night and restored power just before 6 a.m. Tuesday.

In the hours following the crash, crews replaced the damaged pole and reattached utility lines. Because of the repair work, Weaver Dairy Extension was closed between Palafox Drive and Rowe Road, reopening around 6:30 a.m.

Chapel Hill police are currently investigating the cause of the crash. The damaged pole was located at a curve in the road, which may have contributed to the accident.
