Actress Olivia Colman Slams Gender Pay Disparity in Hollywood
British actress Olivia Colman has spoken out against the gender pay gap in Hollywood, highlighting the disparity between male and female actors in terms of earnings.
During an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, Colman expressed her frustration, stating that if she were a man, she would be paid significantly more for her film roles.
Colman, who won an Academy Award for her role in ‘The Favourite,’ shared insights into the unequal pay practices she has witnessed in the industry, citing a shocking 12,000% pay gap in one instance.
The issue of unequal pay in Hollywood gained widespread attention a decade ago and continues to be a point of contention.
Colman discussed the misconception that male actors are bigger box office draws, debunking the notion by pointing out that women have historically been successful in attracting audiences to theaters.
She emphasized that the outdated belief that male actors bring in more viewers is often used as a justification for paying women less than their male counterparts.
Despite her own success in Hollywood, including an Oscar win and multiple nominations, Colman highlighted the ongoing challenge of achieving equal pay for female actors.
The actress is currently promoting her new film ‘Wicked Little Letters,’ based on a true story of poisoned pen messages in Littlehampton, West Sussex in the 1920s.
Colman’s comments come at a time when gender pay equity remains a hot topic in the entertainment industry, with actresses like Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams previously speaking out about their own experiences of being paid less than male co-stars.
In a recent annual list of top-earning actors by Forbes, Colman was one of the few women featured among the predominantly male-dominated rankings.
Other notable actresses mentioned in the list included Margot Robbie and Jennifer Aniston, highlighting the disparity in earnings between male and female performers in Hollywood.
