Adam Goodes Racism 2013

Australian football legend Adam Goodes has shared his reflections on a significant moment when he confronted racism. This incident occurred when a 13-year-old girl called him an “ape” during a match between Sydney and Collingwood in 2013. Despite facing criticism for drawing attention to the racial abuse, Goodes maintains that he would not change his actions if given the chance.

Speaking on ABC TV, Goodes explained his stance by saying, “Some people go, ‘Would you go back and stop that moment where you pointed out to the [13] year-old-girl who racially vilified you?'” He further asserted, “If I did that, and that didn’t happen, then where I am today is completely different.”

Goodes, a two-time recipient of the Brownlow Medal, became a prominent advocate for Indigenous rights in Australia following his open confrontation of racial misconduct. His decision to address the abuse not only highlighted the issue but also led to a life-altering personal encounter. It was during this period that he developed a bond with Natalie Croker, the mother of his children.

“What I did that night was I stood up against racism in that moment,” Goodes said. “Then a year later I was announced Australian of the Year.” He mentioned how the documentary producer, filming him for a profile, became close with him. “So, if I didn’t stand up in that moment I may not have ever met her and I may not be where I am,” he added.

Goodes also mentioned that if he could speak to his younger self, he would reassure him, saying, “Everything will turn out alright.” He expressed gratitude for all his life choices, both positive and negative, as they shaped his identity.

The Australian Football League (AFL) issued an apology to Goodes in 2019 for its lack of support during the final months of his career. The AFL admitted, “The treatment of Adam challenges us, and our right to be considered Australia’s indigenous football code.” The statement also acknowledged that Goodes “was subject to treatment that drove him from football,” and apologized unreservedly for these failures.
