Andrew Cuomo New York City Mayoral Election 2025

NEW YORK, NY — With less than a month until Election Day, Zohran Mamdani holds a double-digit lead in the polls. However, his advantage has slightly diminished since Eric Adams announced he was ending his re-election campaign. A Quinnipiac University poll shows Mamdani leading Andrew Cuomo, 46 percent to 33 percent.

Most of Adams’s supporters appear to have shifted to Cuomo. A previous Quinnipiac survey indicated Cuomo had only 23 percent support with Adams on the ballot. When asked whom they would support without Adams, Mamdani secured 46 percent and Cuomo 30 percent.

Polls are proving challenging in the Democratic primary for the New York City mayor. Initial polls did not predict Mamdani’s lead, but he gained traction in the campaign’s final weeks. Ultimately, he won the first round of voting after ranked-choice tabulation.

In the latest development, Adams has decided to endorse former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the mayoral race. Sources informed CBS News that Adams and Cuomo plan to make a joint appearance soon, just two days before early voting begins.

This endorsement comes after Adams had been speculated to support Cuomo following his campaign suspension. Adams has had a tumultuous time as mayor, which has contributed to his decision to step back from the race. His controversial term has raised questions regarding his capability to lead.

While attending a campaign debate, the candidates discussed pressing issues like the NYPD and Rikers Island, with Mamdani criticizing Cuomo’s record as governor. In response, Cuomo questioned Mamdani’s experience and positions on key policies.

The Democratic primary discusses serious issues, including affordable housing and public transport. Mamdani has refrained from taking clear positions on certain ballot measures. Cuomo remarked, “What a shocker,” in reference to Mamdani’s hesitance.

Adams, who took office in 2022, cited constant media scrutiny and financial hurdles as reasons for his campaign suspension. “Despite all we’ve achieved, I cannot continue my reelection campaign. The decision by the Campaign Finance Board to withhold funds has undermined my ability to compete,” said Adams in a video announcement.

As the election nears, independent candidate Jim Walden remains in the race following a ruling from the Board of Elections.
