Adult Swim Renews ‘Rick and Morty’ for Two Additional Seasons
Adult Swim announced at the New York Comic Con that “Rick and Morty” has been renewed for two additional seasons, extending the popular animated series through its 12th season. This decision ensures that the show will continue airing at least until 2029.
The announcement was made by the series’ executive producers, Dan Harmon and Scott Marder, during a panel at the event. They were accompanied by series regulars Harry Belden, Ian Cardoni, Sarah Chalke, Spencer Grammer, and Chris Parnell.
“Rick and Morty” has been a major success for Adult Swim, becoming the network’s number one series. It follows the story of a sociopathic genius scientist, Rick Sanchez, and his apprehensive grandson, Morty Smith, as they embark on a series of dangerous interdimensional adventures. The show has won two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Animated Program.
Michael Ouweleen, President of Adult Swim, expressed his enthusiasm about the renewal, stating, “From Season One, ‘Rick and Morty’ set a new standard in adult animation and has shown no signs of stopping.”
Dan Harmon highlighted the limitless potential of the show’s universe, adding, “Nobody wants a universe without Rick and Morty. Fortunately, the list of places to go remains infinite.” Scott Marder, who took over as showrunner in Season 5, shared his excitement, saying, “Getting to go beyond that now is such a gift I can’t wait to give our fans. ‘Rick and Morty’ – a hundred years – forever!”
Following the departure of co-creator Justin Roiland in 2023 after legal issues and allegations, new voice actors were announced. Ian Cardoni now voices Rick, while Harry Belden portrays Morty. A sneak peek of an upcoming Season 8 episode was also revealed during the panel, set to premiere in 2025.
