Akron Advances Cascade Parking Deck Renovation with New Legislation
Akron, Ohio – On September 30, 2024, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik announced that he is submitting legislation to the Akron City Council to secure a contract for the design of the Cascade Parking Deck rehabilitation project in downtown Akron. This move follows significant financial backing from the state government, with both the Ohio House of Representatives and the State Senate approving a combined total of $5 million for the renovation.
In February, the Ohio House of Representatives approved $2.5 million for the project, a figure matched by the State Senate in June 2024. The allocated state funds will cover the design work, which is estimated to cost $400,000. This step marks progress in the broader initiative to revitalize downtown Akron.
Akron Mayor Shammas Malik emphasized the importance of this project, stating, “This is the next step in the process of downtown redevelopment. Improving the deck is a significant investment into the heart of our downtown, which is crucial to the experience and accessibility of this corridor. These improvements will allow us to continue supporting residential, retail, and commercial growth and density downtown.” Mayor Malik also expressed gratitude towards community partners and legislators for their support.
The planned renovations include a range of structural and aesthetic improvements, such as repairing columns, patching concrete, replacing stairs and railings, upgrading lighting, addressing issues related to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and enhancing wayfinding and signage. Additionally, the project aims to fix a leak in the pedestrian tunnel under North Main Street and improve drainage and waterproofing in rehabilitated areas.
The design phase of the project is anticipated to take approximately 10 weeks. Construction is slated to begin in the summer of 2025, bringing anticipated developments to fruition in the heart of Akron’s downtown area.
