Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy in Discussions for U.S. Interior Secretary Post Under Trump Administration
Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy is reportedly in discussions with members of President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team about the possibility of becoming the next U.S. Secretary of the Interior. According to sources familiar with the conversations, Dunleavy has expressed his openness to accepting a position within the Trump administration[2].
Dunleavy’s potential appointment has been highlighted by his recent interactions with Trump and his team. The governor was present at a Trump rally at Madison Square Garden last month, where he spent significant time in a private box with Linda McMahon, co-chair of Trump’s transition team. Additionally, Trump praised Dunleavy in a post-election video, emphasizing their “very special relationship” and expressing support for accelerating the development of the trans-Alaska natural gas pipeline.
If appointed, Dunleavy would replace Deb Haaland, who has held the position of Interior Secretary since March 2021. Other candidates, including Sen. Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma, are also being considered for the role, as well as for the post of Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
This development is part of Trump’s ongoing process of naming cabinet nominees and staff members for his incoming administration. Dunleavy’s potential role would mark a significant shift in the leadership of the Department of the Interior, particularly given his stance on resource development in Alaska[2][3]).
