In a recent legal dispute embroiling the realm of country music, a makeup artist, identified under the alias ‘Jane Roe,’ has accused two-time Grammy Award-winning singer Garth Brooks of sexual assault and harassment. Claiming Brooks raped her in a hotel room, the woman has also alleged multiple instances of unwanted advances and harassment. Known for his hits “The Dance,” “Friends in Low Places,” and “If Tomorrow Never Comes,” Brooks has been a staple in the country music scene since moving to Nashville in 1987.

In response, Brooks has filed a separate lawsuit alleging extortion and defamation against the woman. According to Brooks, the accusations are fabricated, and he claims that she has been attempting to extort him for money. “For the last two months, I have been hassled to no end with threats, lies, and tragic tales of what my future would be if I did not write a check for many millions of dollars,” Brooks stated in a statement to ABC News.

The makeup artist’s lawsuit, filed in California, raises allegations of assault, battery, and violations of the Bane Act and Ralph Act, two laws designed to protect individuals from violence and intimidation. She claims the misconduct started in 2019, during a trip to Los Angeles for a Grammy tribute.

Brooks, aged 62 and married to fellow country singer Trisha Yearwood since 2005, states that this legal fight began with a letter he received from the woman’s attorneys in July, detailing the allegations. He says a subsequent letter threatened public exposure if he did not comply with her demands.

The lawsuit further accuses the woman of defamation and emotional distress, suggesting the motivation behind her actions was tied to Brooks not granting her a salaried position or covering medical benefits. Brooks seeks a jury trial and compensation for damages while requesting a declaration from the court that her claims are false.

This case takes a complex turn as both parties have invoked the judicial system to settle the accusations. Brooks’ accuser is represented by attorney Douglas Wigdor, known for high-profile cases including those against Harvey Weinstein. “We applaud our client’s courage in moving forward with her complaint against Garth Brooks,” stated her attorneys.

They also criticized Brooks’ counter-lawsuit as an attempt to silence the accuser. His lawyers described the filing as a preemptive measure intended to intimidate the plaintiff. “We are confident that Brooks will be held accountable for his actions,” the woman’s legal team mentioned in a statement. “No survivor should suffer in silence.”
