DALLAS — Anthony Davis announced Monday that he will wear protective goggles for the remainder of his career after undergoing surgery for a detached retina in his right eye.

The 32-year-old Dallas Mavericks star shared the news during the team’s media day. He confirmed that the injury, which required surgery, occurred after teammate Daniel Gafford accidentally elbowed him in the eye during an April 2 game against the Atlanta Hawks. Despite receiving stitches for a cut above his eye, Davis returned to finish the game, scoring 34 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.

“I think when Gaff elbowed me, it kind of caused some problems in my eye,” Davis explained. “Then in the summer, I always get a routine checkup. Realized I had to have surgery.”

Davis spent much of the offseason recovering from the surgery and began participating in five-on-five games at the Mavericks’ practice facility in late September. He stated he will be a full participant when training camp begins Tuesday in Vancouver, Canada.

The Mavericks acquired Davis in February in a high-profile trade with the Los Angeles Lakers. He had previously missed nearly six weeks after a left adductor strain in his debut with Dallas.

<p“Our goal is to win a championship,” Davis said. “Staying healthy is the biggest thing for our team. Other than that, I think we are going to be fine. I’m happy to be here. I’m excited to be here.”

During the media day, Davis’s right eye appeared red, a side effect of eye drops prescribed by his doctors. Despite the redness, he reported that his vision had returned to normal. “Eye feels great,” he said. “The redness, I have these drops I have to put in my eye.”

Davis is gearing up for the season with optimism, and Mavericks coach Jason Kidd has praised his readiness. In addition to Davis, Kyrie Irving is also recovering from ACL surgery, and both players are key to the Mavericks’ championship aspirations.

As he prepares for the upcoming season, Davis embraces the new look he must adopt for health reasons. “You guys will see me in the Horace Grants,” he joked, referring to the iconic eyewear of former NBA player Horace Grant.

With the pressure of his eye injury behind him, Davis and the Mavericks look forward to a healthy and successful season ahead.
