Alexandria Ocasio Cortez Bernie Sanders Campaign

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A decade after serving as a volunteer for Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders‘ presidential campaign, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has emerged as a prominent figure alongside him in progressive politics. On March 20, 2025, Ocasio-Cortez joined Sanders on his “Fighting Oligarchy” tour, which aims to galvanize support among Democrats and counteract feelings of disillusionment following President Donald Trump‘s political resurgence.

Amid growing tensions within the Democratic Party, Ocasio-Cortez, 35, has garnered a favorable view from approximately half of Democrats, according to a recent AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research survey. Sanders continues to hold a stronger favorable rating at around 75%. In contrast, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is viewed favorably by only a third of Democrats, highlighting a shift toward progressive leadership.

The relationship between Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders has deep roots. Their political bond is often described in familial terms, with Ocasio-Cortez affectionately referring to Sanders as “Tio Bernie” (Spanish for Uncle Bernie). Sanders has publicly recognized Ocasio-Cortez’s contributions, stating, “She stood up and took on one of the most powerful people in the House of Representatives,” referring to her primary victory over Joe Crowley.

Ocasio-Cortez first entered the national spotlight by advocating for the Green New Deal, an ambitious plan aimed at addressing climate change while creating jobs and healthcare opportunities. While some Democrats express concerns over the plan’s feasibility, it remains a rallying point for many in the party.

“When working-class people in this country stand up against the entrenched political elite… they will win,” said Anna Bahr, Sanders’ spokesperson. This sentiment resonates in their joint rallies, where both leaders emphasize economic justice and healthcare as rights for all.

As they campaign together, Ocasio-Cortez draws on her experiences and the motivation she felt watching Sanders fight for everyday Americans. “Every person in this country deserves healthcare as a human right,” she emphasized at a rally in Tempe, Arizona.

Despite the challenges ahead, Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders remain determined to inspire a progressive movement that unites Democrats around shared values, as they prepare for the coming elections.
