Cupertino, California – Apple is set to release smart glasses that aim to transform how users engage with technology. The device promises features such as navigation directions and real-time language translations displayed directly in the wearer’s field of vision, enhancing everyday interactions.

By integrating advanced technology, Apple seeks to provide a sleek alternative to traditional screens, enabling users to stay connected hands-free while capturing memories or managing notifications. The Verge reports that Apple’s design expertise could elevate these glasses into a fashionable accessory, contrasting sharply with the bulkier Vision Pro, which has faced criticism.

Central to the performance of these glasses is a low-power chip derived from the Apple Watch’s system-on-chip (SoC). This innovation delivers iPhone-like capabilities without overheating, addressing issues that plagued earlier augmented reality projects. With an efficient battery ensuring all-day use, these glasses aim to provide a lightweight alternative to existing products that weigh between 600 to 650 grams.

Despite advancements, Apple navigated various challenges while pursuing true augmented reality. In January 2025, Apple shelved plans for AR glasses meant to pair with Macs due to technical hurdles, discovering that it was nearly impossible to achieve optimal performance without overheating.

CEO Tim Cook has remained undeterred, labeling augmented reality a “top priority” for Apple, according to Bloomberg. Cook’s ambition to stay ahead of competitors like Meta intensifies as Apple focuses on a smart glasses model similar to Meta’s Ray-Bans.

These upcoming glasses are expected to reduce users’ reliance on smartphones, allowing them to respond to texts and navigate without pulling out an iPhone. Enhanced audio quality is also a priority, likely on par with AirPods, setting a new benchmark for wearable sound.

Analyst Jon Prosser estimates the retail price of the smart glasses around $499, which would make them more accessible compared to the Vision Pro, with potential additional costs for prescription lenses. With mass production slated for 2026 and a launch anticipated in 2027, Apple is conducting user studies to refine features for broader appeal.

In the competitive market of smart glasses, Apple’s seamless integration with its ecosystem could give it an edge. This innovation might redefine user interaction, similar to how the Apple Watch has changed mobile habits. By merging practical utility with cutting-edge design, Apple aims to position its smart glasses as the next essential wearable.
