Happy Onam 2024 Celebration

Happy Onam 2024: Today marks the third day of Onam, known as Avittam, celebrated by the Malayali community. Although the main festivities of Thiruvonam have concluded, the celebrations continue on Avittam and even the following days, keeping the festive spirit alive. Historically, the Onam celebrations extended to the Thiruvonam day of the month of Kanni, but today it is still seen as an important day of joy and togetherness.

Avittam is often a day when families visit their relatives’ homes, reflecting on the theme of togetherness. Married couples particularly take this opportunity to visit their ancestral homes and celebrate, which is sometimes referred to as ‘Avittam’ due to this customary practice.

Traditional art forms and ceremonies, such as Onathallu, a traditional combat form, are performed on this day. Onathallu at Pallassana is quite famous, serving as a reminder of ancient times when villagers would call warriors to battle in memory of their lost king.

Despite not being as grand as Thiruvonam, a feast is often prepared on Avittam, providing another occasion for friends and family to come together and rejoice. A saying goes, “Second Onam is a feast, third Onam a whisper, fourth Onam merely a touch, and fifth Onam a child’s play,” describing the diminishing intensity of the celebrations as days progress.

On this auspicious day, many exchange Avittam wishes with their loved ones. Sending greetings via WhatsApp has become popular, with many choosing beautiful messages, old proverbs, and artistic images to convey their Happy Onam wishes.

People celebrate Avittam by praying for prosperity and abundance. They wish for joy and unity not just within families but around the globe, conveying love and support through their greetings. The Malayali community worldwide is encouraged to live and celebrate with love and unity, emphasizing the spirit of Onam.

May this Avittam fill every home and heart with peace and happiness. Let us gather and celebrate the joy of the third Onam with prosperity and harmony.
