TAMPA, Fla. — Baker Mayfield is building a strong rapport with veteran receiver Sterling Shepard as injuries plague the Tampa Bay Buccaneers‘ receiving corps. In a thrilling 29-27 victory over the New York Jets on September 21, 2025, Shepard shone with four receptions for 80 yards, continuing his early-season momentum as Mayfield’s reliable target.

Mayfield praised Shepard’s performance following the game, saying, “Shep, just old reliable. He’s my crazy lunatic that I continue to lean on.” This connection has become increasingly vital, especially with star receiver Mike Evans sidelined due to a hamstring injury.

Despite not being the top name on the offense, Shepard’s contributions are significant. With 11 receptions for 153 yards this season, he has demonstrated his ability to perform in crucial third-down situations, with nine of his catches resulting in first downs. His performance is a welcome development, as he has avoided the penalties that plagued him in the past.

“He continues to find ways to win in man coverage and be there in clutch moments for us,” Mayfield added, highlighting Shepard’s value to the team. Head Coach Todd Bowles also praised Shepard, stating, “He can make plays all over the field; we’ve seen that briefly over the last couple of weeks.”

Shepard’s recent performance marks his best game since 2021, where he faced challenges due to injuries that affected his past two seasons. After a strong start with the Buccaneers last year, recording 32 catches for 334 yards and a touchdown, Shepard is on track to return to his pre-injury form, potentially achieving 62 receptions and 867 yards if he maintains his current pace.

With Evans likely out for the upcoming game against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Buccaneers will need Shepard’s experience and prowess. Mayfield, who has already logged three game-winning drives this season, emphasized the team’s resilience amid adversity. “It’s a resilient, mentally tough group,” he said. “When one part of it is a little bit down, others have to pick it up.”

The Buccaneers are gearing up for a crucial matchup as they aim to maintain their winning streak and take on the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles next week.
