Barcelona’s Yamal Out for Champions League Opener Against Newcastle

Barcelona, Spain – FC Barcelona will be without young star Lamine Yamal for their UEFA Champions League opener on Thursday against Newcastle United. The 18-year-old winger failed to recover from a groin injury in time for the match.
Yamal, regarded as one of the club’s most promising talents, had been managing discomfort during the recent international break. Despite taking painkillers, he played in two World Cup qualifiers for Spain, but was forced to miss Barcelona’s recent 6-0 victory over Valencia.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe expressed disappointment at Yamal’s absence, stating, “I’m disappointed that we don’t get to see him at his best playing in the game.” Meanwhile, Barcelona coach Hansi Flick criticized the Spanish Football Federation for allowing Yamal to participate while injured.
“Given the nature of his injury and the high risk of relapse, we are taking no chances,” said Flick, emphasizing the need for Yamal to be fully fit for an upcoming clash with Paris Saint-Germain on October 1.
Yamal started the La Liga season impressively, scoring two goals and assisting two others. His injury has raised concerns among fans and in the media about the long-term handling of young players.
Flick confirmed that Frenkie de Jong would return to the squad after recovering from his own discomfort. Raphinha is expected to start in Yamal’s position, and Marcus Rashford may join him in the attack.
Barcelona aims to kick off their Champions League campaign on a high note after reaching the semifinals last season. Flick acknowledged the challenge of playing at St. James’ Park, a venue known for its intense atmosphere.
“Whoever plays, they’ve got real pace in wide areas,” Howe added. “We need to defend well in those spaces.” With Yamal sidelined, Barcelona’s depth will be tested as they strive for victory in a pivotal European match.
