AMHERST, NY — Jason Beckman, a long-time physical education teacher at Amherst Middle School and revered high school sports coach, has passed away.

Superintendent Anthony Panella informed parents in a statement that the district has no further details regarding Beckman’s death. Panella emphasized the profound impact of this loss on the community and highlighted resources available for students and families affected by the tragedy.

To provide support, Care Rooms will be organized for both middle and high school students. Psychologists, counselors, and social workers will be available to help students navigate their emotions during this difficult time. Panella acknowledged that even those who did not know Beckman may experience feelings of shock, sadness, and confusion.

Beckman served as the coach of Amherst’s varsity football and boys varsity bowling teams. In response to the news, Athletic Director Robert Adams and the varsity football coaching staff will meet with the varsity and junior varsity teams on Wednesday. Additionally, members of the previous year’s boys bowling team will gather as well.

“Each of us will react to Mr. Beckman’s death in our own way, and we need to be respectful of each other,” Panella stated. He also encouraged parents with elementary students in need of support to reach out to their school’s principal.

The Amherst Central School District issued a heartfelt statement mourning Beckman’s death, noting that he was a cherished member of the school community for over 29 years. Beckman’s influence as a teacher and coach has left a lasting legacy, and plans are being made to support faculty, staff, and students as they cope with this loss. Resources for parents will be shared through the district’s communication channels.
