Bernie Sanders Endorses Graham Platner in Maine Senate Race

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Senator Bernie Sanders has endorsed Graham Platner, an oyster farmer and veteran, for the Democratic nomination in Maine’s midterm Senate race. Sanders made his decision public on October 9, 2025, suggesting that his support could help Platner defeat the incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins.
“I think right now, Susan Collins is absolutely beatable,” Sanders told NOTUS. “Graham Platner is a great working class candidate for Senate in Maine who will defeat Susan Collins.”
Platner has positioned himself as a candidate for the working class. His campaign website states he aims to flip the Senate seat “for the working Mainers being priced out of our homes.” He has already raised over $3 million since launching his campaign this summer.
During a recent rally, Sanders praised Platner’s efforts, noting, “He’s running a great campaign. He’s drawing large crowds.” Citing a previous event, Sanders highlighted the enthusiasm surrounding Platner, claiming that 7,000 people attended a rally he co-hosted in September.
Meanwhile, Governor Janet Mills is also rumored to be considering a run for the Senate seat. While various sources suggest she is keeping the possibility of a campaign open as late as the end of 2025, her potential candidacy could complicate Platner’s path to the nomination.
Mills has served as Maine’s governor since 2019 and is known for her clashes with Senate Republicans, including Collins. Despite speculation about Mills’ possible Senate bid, Sanders has urged her to refrain from entering the primary race to avoid divisiveness within the party.
Platner has been vocal about his disagreements with Collins, stating that her actions during the recent government shutdown exhibited a lack of care for Mainers needing healthcare. He asserted, “Over the years, Susan Collins has made it crystal clear that she does not care how many people lose access to healthcare.”
Political leaders, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have encouraged Mills to run, but Sanders warned that pursuing a competitive primary could waste resources needed to defeat Collins.
Both Platner and Mills will face competition from other Democrats, including Dan Kleban and Jordan Wood. The momentum of Sanders’ endorsement may bolster Platner’s position, as he continues to gain traction within the party.
