Biden Calls Trump’s Ukraine Strategy ‘Modern-Day Appeasement’

Delaware, United States — In his first interview since leaving the White House, Joe Biden criticized the foreign policy of former President Donald Trump, calling his approach to Ukraine ‘modern-day appeasement’. The interview aired on Monday as the world commemorates the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
Biden expressed concern that Trump’s pressure on Ukraine to concede territory to Russia would not satisfy Russian President Vladimir Putin, who Biden described as believing Ukraine is part of Russia. ‘Anyone who thinks he’s going to stop if some territory is conceded is just foolish,’ said Biden.
Reflecting on US-European relations, Biden mentioned the potential catastrophic impact of these relations deteriorating. ‘It would change the modern history of the world,’ he added, while emphasizing the importance of cooperation among Allied nations.
The former president was also asked about his decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, a choice he termed a ‘hard decision’. He noted, ‘We left at a time when we had a good candidate,’ suggesting he believed it was the right timing despite the challenges faced.
Responding to Trump’s criticisms of NATO and past policies, Biden reiterated his belief that the alliance was vital for global stability and that ‘every inch of NATO territory’ represents a ‘sacred obligation’.
Biden also addressed claims that he didn’t provide enough military support for Ukraine, asserting that the US had supplied necessary resources while being prepared for further action if Putin escalated military aggression.
As discussions about territory ceding surfaced, Biden compared the situation to historical appeasement strategies, referencing British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain’s tactics before World War II. ‘It is modern-day appeasement,’ he asserted.
In concluding remarks, Biden highlighted his fears regarding the confidence European nations have in America’s commitment. He stated, ‘I fear our allies around the world are going to begin to doubt’ the United States’ steadfastness.
