Joe Biden Public Speech Chicago April 2025

Chicago, IL — Former President Joe Biden is stepping back into the political arena with a public address focused on protecting Social Security, coinciding with nationwide Democratic protests. This marks his first significant speech after leaving office less than 100 days ago, as many Democrats express a desire for him to embrace a quieter retirement.

The address comes at a time when many in Biden’s party are grappling with the current political landscape under President Donald Trump. Some Democrats, including former aides, note their mixed feelings about Biden’s return to the public eye, as he attempts to reshape his post-presidential narrative.

A former Biden supporter reflected on the changes since January 20, stating, “No. Thank God.” This sentiment highlights the stark contrast between Biden’s previously high-profile presidency and his recent absence from the public sphere.

Biden’s public appearances since leaving office have been sparse. He has primarily been in Delaware, making social appearances at local events, including a St. Patrick’s Day brunch, and attending a Model United Nations conference. Furthermore, he recently appeared at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers convention, where he was honored with a lifetime achievement award.

Despite the limited engagements, Biden’s inner circle describes this period as one of “reconnecting, rebuilding, and reflecting.” Reports suggest that he is focusing on personal relationships with family, friends, as well as engaging with former political allies while considering thoughts for a future book.

This past weekend, Biden reached out to Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro to express support following a local Passover event, highlighting his ongoing connections to the Jewish community.

In his speech on Tuesday, co-hosted by the Advocates, Counselors, and Representatives for the Disabled, Biden is expected to emphasize the importance of Social Security and how it has been a vital issue throughout his campaign. Martin O’Malley, former Social Security Administration commissioner, stated that Biden’s extensive record on labor and Social Security makes this speech a fitting return to the political fray.

Biden’s involvement isn’t without controversy. Public discussions surrounding his mental acuity have sparked conversations from within his former staff, which was later downplayed by his former chief of staff, Ron Klain. Klain has since reached out to apologize for his comments.

Despite the challenges and scrutiny, Biden’s supporters believe he has the potential to thrive in this post-presidency phase, saying, “We’re not hearing ‘Stay away.’ We’re hearing the opposite.”

Simultaneously, Biden has not yet begun fundraising for his presidential library, which has left some loyal donors perplexed, as they expected outreach by now. Discussions regarding his foundation and how it will shape his legacy are still ongoing.

Some Democrats have expressed frustration over the perceived distance from Biden since his departure from the White House, often reflecting on how he has operated in recent months. “I haven’t heard of one person who has communicated with him,” said a Democratic member of Congress.

The anticipation for Biden’s speech grows as many within the party hope that he can galvanize support and reshape the discussion on key issues. One aide noted, “People do want him engaged and involved,” underscoring his ongoing relevance to the party’s future.
