Billy Joel Discusses New Music And Residency At Madison Square Garden

Billy Joel made an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to discuss his latest single release and his ongoing residency at Madison Square Garden. Joel shared the inspiration behind his newest song, marking his return to releasing music after three decades.

The legendary musician revealed that his journey back to creating new music began unexpectedly two years ago when he met producer Jimmy Fallon. Initially skeptical, Joel found himself intrigued by the prospect of exploring songwriting once again.

Reflecting on the creative process, Joel expressed his enjoyment of focusing solely on the music itself rather than the music industry’s commercial aspects, hinting that more new music may be on the horizon.

Colbert referenced a past interview where Joel hinted at having a treasure trove of unreleased music, drawing comparisons to reclusive author J.D. Salinger. Joel admitted to having a collection of instrumental and orchestral music but clarified that these were melodic compositions rather than full songs with lyrics.

Joel also delved into his record-breaking Madison Square Garden residency, revealing that he now opts for a train journey to his concerts after a hair-raising helicopter incident.

Further in the interview, Joel reminisced about the 50th anniversary of his classic hit ‘Piano Man’ and shared a playful idea for a short-lived supergroup featuring Sting, Don Henley, and John Mayer – a concept meant for a brief performance before disbanding.

Following a meeting with producer Freddie Wexler, Joel released ‘Turn the Lights Back On,’ a heartfelt ballad that also serves as a message to his dedicated fans who have long awaited new material. Collaborating with a diverse team of songwriters, including Wayne Hector, Arthur Bacon, and Wexler, Joel’s latest track showcases his enduring talent.

Wexler recounted a humorous first encounter with Joel, where he had a limited window to capture the musician’s interest during a lunch meeting. Despite initial reservations, Wexler’s collaboration with Joel culminated in the release of ‘Turn the Lights Back On.’

In a nod to his iconic career milestones, Joel announced the upcoming television special ‘100th: Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden – The Greatest Arena Run of All Time,’ set to air on CBS, celebrating his historic residency that commenced in 2014.
