Birmingham City Council has successfully refurbished and preserved sixteen historic Phoenix pre-fabricated homes, dating back to World War II, to bring them back into use for social housing. These homes, located in the Wake Green area, represent the largest concentration of Phoenix prefabricated homes in the UK and accommodate residents of various ages, including several families.

Originally constructed in the 1940s as part of the post-war housing programme, these bungalows were awarded Grade II-listed status in 1998. The recent refurbishments have modernized the homes, making them more environmentally friendly, safer, and warmer for residents.

The council partnered with regeneration and energy experts, Equans, to deliver a complex restoration programme. This programme included installing new damp-proof concrete floors, replacing drainage systems and plumbing, stabilizing foundations, and enhancing insulation, heating, and electrical systems. The refurbishment also involved updating existing windows and fully landscaping the front and rear gardens.

Resident Lisa Attenborough, who has lived in the bungalows for 48 years, shared, “In 1960, my mum and dad moved in, and this has always been my home. I was born in the back room and have many happy memories here. The restoration has been lovely; it has stayed true to its original form, yet I can feel the difference. The workmen were fantastic and very understanding, they feel like friends now.”

Councillor Jayne Francis, cabinet member for housing and homelessness, commented, “The Wake Green Road bungalows are an important part of history that we are proud to preserve. It’s wonderful to have this living piece of history so close to the centre of Birmingham. The restoration programme has modernized the bungalows while retaining as many original features as possible. This work is a small part of the council’s ongoing efforts to make council homes greener, warmer, and more energy-efficient.”

Dave Parry, Operations Director at Equans, remarked, “We are pleased to have collaborated with the council to make these well-regarded bungalows fit for the future. This project has revitalized the community and made the homes more comfortable and affordable to live in. Residents have already reported reductions in energy bills, thanks to the efficient insulation, heating systems, and temperature controls now installed.”
