BJP Leader Ram Madhav Discusses Political Climate in Jammu and Kashmir
In a recent interview, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ram Madhav discussed the party’s political strategy and outcomes in Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting the challenges and opportunities facing the BJP in the region. Speaking to Hindustan Times, Madhav addressed the National Conference‘s (NC) political strategies, the impact of Article 370‘s abrogation, and the future role of the BJP in the territory.
Madhav noted that while the BJP did not win any seats in the Valley during the recent elections, the party’s presence and message have been more widely received than in the past. “We came second in two seats,” he said, highlighting Gurez as a district where the BJP was competitive. Madhav emphasized the increasing public engagement at BJP rallies, which he interprets as a sign of growing interest in the party’s platform.
Reflecting on the abrogation of Article 370, Madhav argued that the NC used the issue as a diversion to galvanize electoral support. “It was just a ploy,” he stated, suggesting that there was minimal support for the article’s restoration in the Valley. On the question of statehood, Madhav indicated that while the BJP supports restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, the timing remains contingent on broader political discussions within Parliament.
The BJP’s campaign in the region focused heavily on development achievements and national security. According to Madhav, initiatives under Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s government have significantly transformed the Union Territory over the past five years, contributing to the BJP securing a substantial vote share in the elections.
Madhav acknowledged concerns about regional representation, noting the lack of NC representation in Jammu, thus highlighting the political divide between Jammu and the Valley. “It is for the NC to think carefully… they cannot ignore the interests and sentiments of the people of Jammu,” he stated.
The interview also touched on the possibility of confrontation between the Lieutenant Governor and an elected government, with Madhav expressing hope for cooperation rather than conflict. Additionally, he commented on the participation of parties and individuals who have historically boycotted elections, describing it as a positive step towards greater integration within India’s democratic framework.
On the future expansion of the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir, Madhav emphasized the need for the party to extend its influence beyond its traditional strongholds. He concluded by expressing disappointment over the BJP’s inability to prevent an NC-Congress alliance from forming the government, while remaining optimistic about the party’s prospects in future elections.
