BJP President JP Nadda Resigns from Himachal Pradesh Rajya Sabha Seat and Continues from Gujarat
Bharatiya Janata Party’s National President, Jagat Prakash Nadda, has officially resigned from his position as a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament representing Himachal Pradesh. The resignation was accepted by Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar. With Nadda’s resignation, the Rajya Sabha seat from Himachal Pradesh has now become vacant starting from the 4th of March.
Last month, Nadda had been elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat and was among the 57 Rajya Sabha members whose tenures were set to end in April. Despite resigning from the Himachal Pradesh seat, Nadda will continue as a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament from Gujarat.
Jagat Prakash Nadda previously served as the Union Health Minister from 2014 to 2019 before becoming the BJP‘s National President in January 2020. His term as BJP President has been extended until June.
In the recent Rajya Sabha polls, BJP managed to secure the only Rajya Sabha seat from Himachal Pradesh, a state currently governed by Congress. Harsh Mahajan of the BJP emerged as the victorious Rajya Sabha MP, defeating the Congress candidate, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, in a tiebreaker draw following both candidates receiving 34 votes each. Despite having only 25 MLAs in the state, BJP was able to benefit from cross-voting.
Notably, Nadda was among the 41 candidates who won their Rajya Sabha seats unopposed, paving the way for the crucial upcoming Lok Sabha polls. His nomination from Gujarat added another BJP Member of Parliament to the Rajya Sabha from the state.
