BJP’s Unexpected Setbacks in India’s General Election: A Political Turnaround
Following the completion of India‘s vast general election, unexpected outcomes have surfaced, marking a significant political turnaround for the governing party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Despite the BJP securing a majority with its allies, the BJP alone fell short of its anticipated margin in the Lok Sabha.
The opposition, Indian National Congress, won an unforeseen number of seats, signaling a shift from the previous election results in 2019 when the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) emerged with a sweeping victory.
The state of Uttar Pradesh (UP) played a pivotal role in reshaping the political landscape, witnessing surprising wins for the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress alliance, disrupting the BJP’s stronghold. Notably, BJP lost ground in Ayodhya, home to the Ram Janmabhoomi temple.
