Boston Mayor Michelle Wu Welcomes Baby Girl, Continues Work
BOSTON — Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and her husband, Conor Pewarski, welcomed their third child, a baby girl named Mira Wu Pewarski, on Monday afternoon, according to a statement from her office. The newborn weighed 8 pounds, 4 ounces and measured 20 inches long.
Wu, 40, and the baby are both in good health, and the mayor has remained in contact with her senior staff. “Mayor Wu wishes to express her deepest gratitude to the nurses, doctors, and healthcare staff who made this possible for her family and who work every day to support so many families across the city,” her office said in a statement.
Mira joins her two older brothers, Blaise and Cass. In an email to campaign supporters, Pewarski shared photos of the newborn and her siblings, writing, “As you can see, the boys are already in love with their new little sister. Thank you for all the well wishes — we can’t wait for you to meet her!”
Wu, who became Boston’s first woman and first person of color elected mayor in 2021, announced her pregnancy in July. At the time, she indicated she did not plan to take maternity leave, citing the unique demands of her role. “In the past, given the unique nature of my job, I have not taken leave. I have continued to, you know, certainly make adjustments to the job for physical health and recovery but continue to be present for the community,” Wu said.
While her office did not confirm her final decision on maternity leave, Wu has scaled back on public appearances. She postponed the annual State of the City address, typically held in January, until March. “The team is ready to be able to represent me where needed out and about,” Wu said. “I will see how it goes and how quickly I feel ready to be out and about as well.”
