BOULDER, Colo. — The University of Colorado Boulder has appointed Amanda Haertling Thein as the new dean of its School of Education, effective July 1, 2025. The announcement was made by Provost Russell Moore on Friday, Jan. 19.

Thein, currently the associate provost for graduate and professional education and dean of the Graduate College at the University of Iowa, brings a wealth of experience in education leadership and research. She is a nationally recognized scholar in English and literacy education, with a focus on equity in high school English language arts instruction and teacher education.

“Dr. Thein has the leadership acumen, commitment, and vision to elevate the School of Education during a critical time for education research and policy,” Moore said. “Her work aligns with the urgent need to prepare the next generation of educators.”

Thein has published nearly 40 journal articles, book chapters, and books, and has secured external funding for her research. She also served as co-editor of an international literacy journal for six years. Her scholarship emphasizes educational democracy and public education as a cornerstone of societal progress.

“I am truly honored to lead a community that shares my commitment to educational opportunity and public scholarship,” Thein said. “This role allows me to contribute to the excellence of CU Boulder, a university that shaped my own path.”

Thein holds a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the University of Minnesota, a master’s degree from the University of Denver, and two bachelor’s degrees from CU Boulder in English and journalism. Her return to CU Boulder marks a full-circle moment in her career.

Provost Moore also acknowledged the efforts of the search advisory committee, led by Katherine Eggert, vice chancellor for academic planning and assessment, and thanked Fernando Rosario-Ortiz for his service as interim dean during the transition.
