Brewers Dominate Cubs in Game 1 of NLDS

MILWAUKEE, WI – The Milwaukee Brewers took a commanding lead in the National League Division Series with a decisive 9-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs in Game 1 on Saturday. The stadium erupted in boos for Cubs manager Craig Counsell, a former Brewers player, as he returned to his old stomping grounds.
After Saturday’s defeat, the Cubs find themselves in a challenging position. They must now win three of the next four games against the Brewers, the best team in baseball this season, to avoid elimination. Milwaukee’s ability to put the ball in play consistently and run the bases effectively frustrated the Cubs from the start.
The Brewers struck early, scoring six runs in the first inning off Cubs starter Matthew Boyd. The inning showcased three hits, a walk, and a crucial error by second baseman Nico Hoerner, extending the frame and allowing outfielder Jackson Chourio to hit a two-run single. Milwaukee, known for their speed on the bases rather than home run power, capitalized on every opportunity.
Despite the early offensive explosion, Counsell’s decision to start Boyd on three days’ rest was questioned. Boyd, in his first major league season since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2023, struggled early and could not complete the first inning.
Hoerner’s misplay proved costly. With two runners on and one out, he failed to field a soft liner cleanly, allowing a run to score and giving the Brewers additional scoring chances.
Chourio, a promising 21-year-old, shined in the first inning with a double and a two-run single before being taken out of the game due to a right hamstring injury. Preliminary tests revealed hamstring tightness, and his status remains uncertain as the series continues on Monday.
The Cubs will take Sunday’s off day to regroup before they attempt to bounce back in Game 2. Their recent performances have been lackluster, scoring only four runs across their last four postseason games. Their inability to score in later innings has been particularly concerning.
As the Cubs reevaluate their strategy, the Brewers look to build on their strong performance moving forward in this crucial series.
