Brock Vandagriff Faces Tough Test Against No. 3 Texas in SEC Showdown
Brock Vandagriff, the quarterback for the Kentucky Wildcats, is set to face one of the toughest defensive units in the country as his team takes on the No. 3 Texas Longhorns on Saturday. Vandagriff, who was ranked among the top high school quarterbacks in the 2021 recruiting class alongside Texas’s Quinn Ewers, has had a mixed season so far.
Vandagriff has passed for 1,542 yards, nine touchdowns, and seven interceptions this season. His best performance came in Kentucky’s win over Ole Miss, where he threw for a career-high 243 yards. Despite these numbers, Vandagriff is still awaiting a breakout game to propel the Wildcats forward in a season that has seen them struggle, particularly on offense.
The challenge ahead is significant, as Texas boasts the No. 1 total defense in the SEC, allowing just 249 yards per game and ranking fourth nationally in points allowed per game with an average of 11.9 points. The Longhorns’ secondary has been particularly stingy, surrendering only three passing touchdowns while intercepting 15 passes. Senior cornerback Jahdae Barron leads the team with four interceptions.
Kentucky’s offense, which ranks dead last in the SEC in scoring with an average of 21.9 points per game, will need to find ways to penetrate the robust Texas defense. The Wildcats have not scored more than 20 points in any SEC game this season, making this matchup even more daunting.
Despite the odds, Kentucky coach Mark Stoops remains optimistic about finishing the season strong and keeping the Wildcats’ bowl streak alive. Kentucky needs to win its final two games to extend its bowl appearance streak to nine seasons).
