Browns Name Backup QB as Season Approaches Amid Roster Changes

BEREA, Ohio — The Cleveland Browns have made significant changes to their quarterback lineup as the regular season approaches. After trading quarterback Malik Pickett and releasing veteran quarterback Joe Flacco, the team has finalized its quarterback roster with three players: starter Deshaun Watson and rookies Trace McSorley and Dylan Sampson.
Browns coach Kevin Stefanski announced on Tuesday that rookie Sampson, picked in the third round of the draft, would be Watson’s backup as they head into Week 1. Former starting quarterback Kareem Hunt has been placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list due to an Achilles injury, sidelining him for at least the first four games of the season.
Despite initial plans to retain all four quarterbacks, the Browns decided to trade Pickett for a 2026 fifth-round pick, leaving Watson, McSorley, and Sampson on the roster. Sampson showed promise during training camp, indicating he might be ready to step up when needed.
As they prepare for the opening game, the Browns are also focusing on strengthening their offense. Watson, 40, will be relying on talented receivers, including former Pro Bowlers Amari Cooper and David Njoku. The team aims for a rejuvenated passing attack, especially after Watson’s last successful season with Flacco.
“I feel good about these guys, man,” Flacco said. “They’re talented players, and I think we’re pretty talented up front. If we can get everybody rolling, we should have confidence heading into Week 1.”
Running back Nick Chubb‘s departure has left a gap in the backfield, and the Browns are searching for emerging players. Draft picks and hopefuls such as Sampson and a roster addition from waivers will need to show their worth as they begin the season.
The acquisition of rookie tight end Cody Fannin from the draft is expected to bring versatility to the offense. Fannin has already aligned with the starters and is being positioned as a key contributor.
“I think he’s going to be a hell of a player and an important piece for us,” Flacco added, emphasizing the importance of integrating Fannin into their game plans.
Overall, with modifications to their roster, the Browns are preparing to tackle the upcoming challenges while maintaining a confident outlook for the new season.
