Burna Boy Makes History as First Afro-fusion Artist to Perform at the Grammy Awards
Burna Boy, the Nigerian Afro-fusion artist, made history on Sunday night as he became the first artist from the Afro-fusion genre to perform at the Grammy Awards. This monumental moment was acknowledged by Burna Boy’s representatives in a press release before the event.
The host of the night, Trevor Noah, introduced the “Grammy winning sensation originally from Nigeria” before Burna Boy took the stage. Burna Boy’s performance showcased his energetic dancers and a backing band dressed in green, paying homage to the Nigerian flag. With his red rhinestone-adorned jacket, gray pants, and snapback, Burna Boy exuded smiles and swagger as he brought his culture to the Grammy stage.
Burna Boy kicked off his performance with the song “On Form” and seamlessly transitioned into “City Boys” with the support of his crew. He then brought out legendary singer Brandi, who lent her vocals to the 1998 hit “Top of the World” by Ma$e, which is sampled in Burna Boy’s song “Sittin' on Top of the World.” 21 Savage, featured on the remix of the song, joined them on stage, making it his Grammy performance debut.
Burna Boy was the most nominated African artist at the Grammy Awards, with four nominations. These included Best Melodic Rap Performance for “Sittin’ on Top of the World,” Best Global Music Album for his latest album “I Told Them…,” Best Global Music Performance for “Alone” from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack, and the inaugural Best African Music Performance for “City Boys.” In 2021, Burna Boy won his first Grammy for Best Global Music Album with his album “Twice as Tall.”
This historic performance at the Grammy Awards cements Burna Boy’s status as a trailblazer in the Afro-fusion genre, solidifying his global impact and recognition.
Rolling Stone, part of Penske Media Corporation, and Billboard Media, LLC have covered Burna Boy’s remarkable journey and accomplishments throughout his career.
The Grammy Awards took place at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, with Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. commending Burna Boy as a superstar from Nigeria before his performance.
