Calcutta High Court Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay Resigns To Enter Politics

In a surprising turn of events, Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay of the esteemed Calcutta High Court has announced his decision to step down from the judiciary and make an entry into the political realm. Justice Gangopadhyay, who is set to retire later this year, has been embroiled in various controversies involving the TMC and its leader Abhishek Banerjee.

The judge expressed his intentions in an interview with the Bengali TV news channel ABP Ananda, stating, “I will enter the field of politics. I am not disclosing my party preference today, but after wrapping up my pending court duties, I will resign and inform the Chief Justice and the President.”

Following the recent announcement of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections by the BJP, Justice Gangopadhyay’s decision comes amidst ongoing tensions with the TMC. The judge cited repeated challenges from the ruling party as a driving force behind his move to join politics.

When asked about potential party affiliations, Justice Gangopadhyay mentioned his openness to Congress, Left, BJP, and smaller parties, explicitly ruling out the TMC due to his views on the state of affairs in West Bengal under their rule.

Over the past couple of years, Justice Gangopadhyay’s courtroom has witnessed heated exchanges with legal representatives of the state government and the TMC leader. His outspoken remarks and directives in several high-profile cases have brought national attention to the judiciary’s role in tackling corruption and ensuring accountability.

In a final statement, Justice Gangopadhyay revealed his plan to tender his resignation on March 5, emphasizing the need for a renewed commitment to upholding integrity in governance and serving the people beyond the confines of a courtroom.
