INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams demonstrated promising potential in his third NFL start, despite the team’s loss against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. Williams, the No. 1 overall draft pick, exceeded 300 yards for the first time this season and delivered the Bears’ first two passing touchdowns of the year. However, his efforts fell short in producing a fourth-quarter comeback.

Reflecting on the match, Williams remained optimistic about the team’s progress. “Got our first two passing touchdowns of the year, which obviously feels good,” Williams commented. “I think the offensive identity is brewing. I think it’s a lot closer than it was the week before or weeks before, I think it’s right there. I think we were one small detail away on a lot of these plays and that includes me.”

Following a bruising game against the Houston Texans last week, Williams appeared more resilient this time, leaving the field with a determined demeanor. The Bears, with a current record of 1-2, have consistently faced challenges with pass protection. Despite Williams’ career-best performance of 33 completions on 52 attempts over 363 yards, he endured four sacks and several hits, affecting his ability to perform efficiently.

Williams’ day was marred by two interceptions and a fumble, exacerbated by a troubled offensive line. Running back Jonathan Taylor‘s crucial 1-yard scoring run for the Colts with just over five minutes left effectively sealed the Bears’ fate in a 21-9 defeat.

The Bears managed only 63 rushing yards, a disappointing output against a Colts defense that has struggled against the run this season. Offensive struggles were compounded by injuries, as right guard Nate Davis was replaced by Matt Pryor and left tackle Braxton Jones briefly exited due to an apparent leg issue.

Coach Matt Eberflus acknowledged Williams’ contribution and the necessity for teamwork in offensive success. “I was pleased with the distribution of the football by Caleb,” Eberflus stated. “That allowed the receivers to have confidence. I thought we were committed to the run. I’m proud of the way the defense played. But the most important thing is winning.”

Wide receiver DJ Moore, who recorded eight catches for 78 yards, also expressed optimism about the offense’s potential, saying, “The quick game was there. When we needed to throw the ball down the field, we could. When you look past the turnovers and the penalties, you can start to see the offense coming alive.”
